CDA and Chinese Firm Collaborate to Launch Cable Car Project in Islamabad to Boost Tourism

In a significant move to elevate Islamabad’s tourism profile, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) held high-level discussions with a leading Chinese consultancy firm on Monday to explore the development of major recreational projects in the federal capital. A key highlight of the talks was the proposed cable car and chairlift system that would connect Daman-e-Koh to Saidpur Village—two of Islamabad’s most popular tourist spots.

The meeting was chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa and attended by senior officials from the authority’s environment, planning, and finance departments, as well as a delegation from the Chinese firm. The dialogue focused primarily on the feasibility, safety, and economic viability of the proposed project, which is envisioned to become a major tourism landmark in the city.

Chairman Randhawa emphasized the transformative potential of the project, stating that it would not only enhance the capital’s tourism appeal but also provide a boost to the local economy. He remarked, “The revenue generated from this initiative will be reinvested in the city’s development,” underlining the project’s long-term value for Islamabad’s infrastructure and public services.

In a bid to accelerate the project’s progress, Chairman Randhawa directed officials to promptly initiate the feasibility study, conduct a detailed safety analysis comparing cable cars and chairlifts, and draft a phased implementation plan, including preparation of the essential PC-1 document required for official approval.

The Chinese delegation commended CDA’s proactive efforts in advancing the city’s tourism infrastructure and pledged technical expertise to support the project’s implementation, citing China’s vast experience in building similar transit systems in mountainous and urban regions.

Randhawa also highlighted the untapped tourism potential of Islamabad, expressing optimism that partnerships like these would help unlock the city’s natural and cultural treasures for both domestic and international travelers.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strategic cooperation aimed at developing innovative, safe, and sustainable tourism solutions for the capital.

If approved and executed, the cable car system is expected to offer a scenic, eco-friendly, and efficient travel experience, making it easier for tourists to explore the lush Margalla Hills while reducing traffic congestion in the area.
